It's back...
Cleats, jerseys, those crazy long socks, lots and lots of laundry, practices, games, almost daily packing of the cooler, creative entertainment for the little kids, driving..and a little more driving, afternoons and evenings, every Saturday.

And..giggles, laughter, a new team, lasting friendships, cheers and chants to learn, bubble gum in the dug out, learning something when we lose and feeling accomplished when we win.

Mostly, what is back is that look of contentment that I have not really seen since we packed up her softball gear over the summer. That is back. I am happy.

I have photographed this little doll several times over the past year. She is without a doubt one of my model babies..She loves to have her photograph taken as much as I love chasing her around to capture her in all the wonderment of being a one year old.

Is this child not a living doll?! Her momma affectionately refers to her as the "tiny human"...I love it! She will no doubt grow to be a beautiful, strong little girl..I cannot wait to see her grow into a bigger human:) This newborn session was done when she was around three weeks which is pretty late by most photographers' windows for photographing newborns..Most babies by two weeks will no longer be interested in letting us "pose" them. However, this little darling gave me the most modelesque newborn poses as if she had been modeling her whole life. She was a joy!

There was rain scheduled the afternoon of this session, but we decided to roll with it and we are sure glad we did. A beautiful winery, gorgeous kids, and amazing smoky grey clouds made a terrific backdrop for this relaxed family portrait session. I always tell my families..there is nothing more enjoyable then finding a location where you can have an easy going and fun experience. Don't Settle

In the past few weeks I have enjoyed pouring over all the New Year Resolutions posted by friends and family on Facebook and the random ones on Pinterest, some of which are totally hilarious..like remembering to end all your dates in 12. I am already totally guilty of dating everything this year with last years date.

Some resolutions are lofty (losing a ton of weight) while others are small (putting your junk mail in the trash before it piles up).

In all of this I could not help but think..what is the one resolution that I never kept up with that I wish I had? It seemed to me that it really had nothing to do with the tasks or goals I wished I had achieved but rather the route in which I attempted to get there. The success of these things only measured by my own markers of how far I had come, not by where I actually was. When I have felt successful, when I have felt happy, what was the common denominator? Simple. I didn't settle.

If you're in a job you hate, quit.
If you're in a relationship where you are not being treated right, change it, or leave it.
If you know your child is capable of better, stay right beside them.
Giving up/settling is not a choice.
If you want to be somewhere else, go there. Now.
If you want better health, make the right choices to get there.
If you love someone, tell them. Now.
If you need help, ask for it.
If you feel uninspired, look within, you have all the inspiration you need.

In case your wondering if I have been to a Tony Robbins seminar lately, the answer is no. It's just that our time here on this earth is too short, and none of us our guaranteed any number of days. So why are we fearful? Why don't we risk more? It hardly seems the loss we may incur is not worth the risk in the first place. So. Don't. Settle.

If you want to start a business, start it.
If you want to sing from the rooftop, sing baby sing.
If you want to leave a legacy in this world before you go, do something awesome everyday.
Don't Settle.

Everyday I wake up to a man I love and three incredible children. It's not perfect..it's a mess, it's chaos. BUT.. I love them all so deeply by heart literally aches. In this area of life, I did not settle. I get to document some of the most precious moments of peoples lives. Sometimes it is their first moments of being a family. Sometimes it is their last moments. It is amazing, beautiful, sometimes heart breaking and always miraculous. I get to witness this because I did not settle.

So it is clear to me there are many areas in the rest of my life that need the same mantra, that same fire that the above examples share. So my dear lovelies the only thing I hope for you this year is that your heart burns passionately for something..anything.. and above all that you don't settle.

Full force into our fall family sessions, I had a great time following this lovely foursome around our local pumpkin patch, and some of my favorite stomping grounds in the beautiful Mt. Diablo sunlight. I must say these young ladies were absolutely precious to each other..hanging on one another and tiny little giggles emerging here and there..It was a beautiful Sunday, and I felt blessed to share it with a beautiful family.

Happy Wednesday lovelies. As we are making our way to cooler fall weather we are in full swing with holiday sessions around here.

As is typical this time of year I am behind on posting my current sessions to the blog but will play some catch up in the next few days. We are down to one more available slot for a weekend session if you want your photos before the holidays. I can still take one or two more week day appointments.

If you are expecting, please call me as soon as can to get on our schedule before you need your maternity and newborn portraits. I want to give you priority in choosing the right time during your pregnancy for your maternity session (30-34 weeks is ideal) and get your newborn scheduled for a week after your estimated due date. This ensures we get all of those lovely newborn poses.

Holiday card designs will be up later in the week as well..Whew, it is about to get CRAZY..and I love it!!!

It is almost that time of year again. I know it seems crazy...being very warm today, and Halloween is still a month away.

However, this weekend it will be October the official start of fall and before you know it the Halloween candy is passed out and the turkey is being carved and you look up and realized you really meant to schedule that photo sesssion..

There are certain things that symbolize home..for Bay Area natives few symbols are more prolific then the Golden Gate Bridge. One of the modern marvels of our time there is something very uplifting and awe inspiring about that international orange presence that dances above the bay.

Our family had a fun little outing last weekend as we wound down our summer vacation. If you are not from the Bay Area please observe the warmer clothing needed for the beach even in August..You can always spot a tourist as they are the folks in tank tops and shorts..and are shivering:)

I have had quite a few 1st Birthday photo sessions lately..and I have loved every minute of it. One year olds are so enchanting as they explore the world around them. This little darling is so fun and has the best smiles..but she also has the best crying face I think I have ever photographed!

The Golden Hour...It is the quintessential time on the crest of sunset when the light..the golden light..is just perfect. There is no equipment, no studio lighting, no photo shop actions that can come close to the real thing.

She just turned 3..she is becoming a big girl..gaining new independence each precious day. We said good bye to sippy cups, so long to diapers and will soon be saying hello to preschool. The more she grows..the more freedom I have. As a momma this is the one of those bitter sweet times. As I regain more time to myself I see with utter clarity the sweetness and wonder of these days is fleeting..she will get bigger, make friends and grow and be absolutely amazing..But right now...it is our time. Still a Momma and Babe..this is our golden hour.

It is sooo hot today I feel like this....

I know I have been neglecting Momma's Mondays..So sorry bloggies..I will try and keep up..There has been spring sessions, spring cleaning, little league, and last week our monkey in the middle turned 6!

Moms always say the same thing. "Where did the time go..Where has my baby gone?' It's cliche, but it's true. It happens in the blink of an eye. I can remember with utmost clarity the moment I found I was expecting our son, the moment he was born and a million moments since. Yet, all these moments seem to have somehow occurred in record speed.

If you have ever had the pleasure of being a mother to a six year old boy you know all too well they are totally full of beans most of the time. The thing is, I happen to love the full of beans six year old that cracks me up everyday and redeems his often inappropriate behavior with the sweetest hugs and kisses ever. I shall cherish the beans as long as they last:)

I love photographing birthday sessions. All ages are great, but one year olds really rock my world! Their personalities are in full force and they are so incredible to watch as they explore the world around them with such acute awareness. For example..BIRTHDAY CAKE!!! Some touch the frosting with utter disgust and others totally go for it..Just like our little guy here. So this weekend..Party like a 1 year old! Get your hands and face (even your feet) a little dirty and live life to the fullest!

Rites of passage...

After a weekend filled with activities..little league games, a fantastic photo session which I will share later this week, and spring cleaning..I was stopped in my tracks when my 5 year old ran to me Sunday evening with his tiny little tooth in hand..

How could it be the little boy smile that I just captured last week has suddenly morphed into a big boy gummy grin? His tooth was barely wiggling..How on earth was it out!!

The little man asked me why I was smiling at his funny new smile. He thought it was because he looked older..It was actually because it reminded me of how little he just was...before he had any teeth to lose. Isn't it funny how you know such seemingly small events will stay with you for your lifetime?

Thank you little man for making Momma stop and smell the roses this weekend. You will forever me my little gummy bear:)

Ahhh. It stopped raining... finally. It has been raining for days and based on forecast it will be raining for at least the next week. So when I started to see bits of blue in the sky mid morning today, the little ones and I seized the chance to run around some open space behind our house...Now I have evidence that they actually like each other; at least some of the time:)

The clouds have moved back in now and the winds have picked up..but this will sustain the little ones and me..for now.

So I spent a very soggy afternoon yesterday chasing after a bunch of dogs...Oh yeah..you know you wish you were there..Watching the crazy camera lady cover her precious cameras with their own jackets while she herself was sopping wet, sloshing around a grassy field trying to catch silly doggie expressions as a group of canines maneuvered over a slippery obstacle course:)

Truth be told, I had a pretty good time. This was the first adventure I have had with my sister in a long time. Two girls (and a couple of dogs) out on an adventure. The adventure was a fly ball meet up with some other dog lovers and some seriously driven dogs. These pups were pretty awesome. I will share some fun shots I got later in the week but the moment that amused me the most was when my sisters dog Lex decided to take a break from the course and paraded off into a doggy fountain in the rain..I am not sure why I was so darn amused by this, but I just kept thinking.."yep, leave it to a dog to go splashing around in a fountain during a downpour"...Simple fun I guess..this is why I love capturing kids and animals. They just go about their lives without any apologies.

Ahhh...So back to Momma's Mondays. My whole reason for picking up my camera to start with often keeps me from getting all my work done:) Kids take up most of my life, but I wouldn't have it any other way. Now that the new Hold 'Em Photography site is up and I am caught up on client edits I can have a little fun with my own little babes. My darling niece paid me a little visit today. I get her for about an hour or two each week and frankly, my sister is lucky she gets her back:) I could eat her up.. I say this even though the little darling has decided the floor is laden with poison and she must never be put down on it..When I say never, I mean not for one darn second. I got about 6 frames in today before crocodile tears were billowing down these little cheeks. So the camera went down and the baby went up. I love this age, I love those cheeks, those eyes, I love this baby...can you tell?

Momma's Mondays 10 Things You May Not Know About Me...

1) I would be super grouchy without my afternoon Pepsi...I know, I know..super bad for me..but everyone has to pick at least one bad thing to drink or eat..that is a rule.

2) I am incredibly nostalgic..almost to a fault.

3) I have lived in the same county my entire life, though as a kid I moved at least a dozen times.

4) All my babies were born and brought home to the house we live now. Mr. Hold 'Em and I will probably live here until the day we die. I guess we are making up for no. 3.

5) I grew up in a family full of grease monkeys (aka mechanics) and I am super proud of it.

6) My earliest childhood memory is hearing the roar of the car races on Sunday mornings on television.

7) I am a smell good junkie..it could be super expensive aromatherapy or a glade plug in..if it smells good..I am all about it.

8) If I go to long without taking a photograph (like a few days) I get antsy and develop an ailment I have named "the shutter bug".

9) When I was a kid, I wanted to grow up to be a Solid Gold Dancer...ummm yeah...

10) I am incredibly amazed at how well rounded my children are because of my husband and myself and also in spite of us.

Familiarity is a good thing. Especially when you have a session with 17 people!

Large group portraits or sessions can be challenging but in this case there was nothing but a bunch of laughter. Knowing most of these folks for the better part of 20 years I expected nothing less!

We had a gorgeous morning in Clayton and a very fun and enjoyable large group portrait session.

Next time you have all your extended family in town give us a call. Getting everyone in one place at one time is pretty priceless these days.

I could just hug this lovely all day long! Those cheeks, those eye lashes, all that yummy squishy babyness...just make me soooo happy! You can tell I love baby portraits, but I am particularly endeared to this little darling. She is my niece. This baby diva and my sister just relocated back to the Bay Area..to be near a doting Auntie of course:)

Having a little one at my finger tips for impromptu baby hugs and portrait sessions just leaves me giddy. So all I can say is get used to seeing this adorable face all over the website and blog. Kisses and hugs "Little"...Auntie LOVES you!

I know a lot of people out there dread Valentines Day but I really love it! I think I just like the tiny traditions that surround the day. The mushy cards, the oodles of pink and red everywhere and of course the little candy hearts that are oh so cute...

I got a little time in with my smallest valentine this week..
No worries, her siblings will be following suit soon, but alas they are busy in school during the week and my "little" is usually right beside me or clinging to Momma's leg so there are quite a few more moments for me to grab my camera.

It is very interesting that we all look so forward to a new year. I suppose it is just human nature to wonder about the possibilities and amazing potential that a new year seems to dangle in front of us.

As I finally got the last holiday decoration put away today, my living room seemed so fresh and new...it was the same room it had been just a month ago. The only thing that has changed was my perspective. It wasn't really a fresh and new room I was looking at rather a new canvas of possibilities. Now that the kiddos are getting bigger I can put a few more decorator items out that have been put up safely away from little hands.

While it is fun to contemplate the new arrangement that will find it's way to my cocktail table in the coming days..I would so gladly trade those old baubles for the tiny hands of yesterday. I so miss babyhood. I am sure my sister along with my friends with young babies would love to remind me of the sleepless nights and constant demands..yet mother nature has a way of making you forget:) So I relive babyhood through my baby sessions, niece, friends and portraits of my own sweet babes.

Here is a toast to all the babies that I have had the precious opportunity to hold and love and now get the privilege to see grow into amazing human beings. I am sure like all the years that have come and gone this year will also yield endless possibilities and potential. Happy New Year to you and yours.

Bedtime stories with Momma.

I love this part of the day. Not because I am about to get my house back, or actually be able to get things done:) but because in the evenings right before bed is when my children are at their sweetest and most true selves. It is when I hear about the best and worst parts of their day. When they talk to me about the things that make children...well, children.

"Momma..when I grow up can I still live here? Can I come and climb in your bed if I have a bad dream?" I only hope they still want to hang out with Mr. Hold 'Em and myself. The days, weeks, and years seem to be moving in some sort of fast forward setting. I am completely helpless to slow it down.

I suppose that is why I love the bedtime story routine so...It is by any definition or measure the slowest part of our day. I looked around my daughters room as I grabbed the book she requested. Looking at her jewelry box I remembered I had one almost identical to it as a child, only mine was blue. My father gave it to her as a gift for her birthday..I wonder if he had remembered the one I had as well. She insisted I take a picture of our toes. We just got pedicures with fancy glitter and flowers as a treat for a great report card before the holiday break...I love good report cards:)

The children are tucked in and dreaming away..my world is happy and at peace. Night night, sleep tight.

I have never been a fan of Monday's. Let's face it, the start of a new work week, no chance whatsoever of sleeping in (like it happens anyway with kids...but go along with me), the hustle and bustle of getting things done all falls on Monday.

So I decided I need a little break in the monotony..a little breath of fresh air. Two of the things that bring me the utmost joy in life are my children and photography. So why not end each Monday with a reflection of two of my loves? I cannot think of a better way to start each and every week...so Mondays will now be Momma's Mondays for me...I hope you enjoy the crazy ride that is my life:)

Today I got to spend time with a great friend, a fellow mom, and a great photographer as well. We love capturing our babies. My baby is now 2 and a half...I suppose I cannot call her a baby for much longer. Anyway, we met at our favorite little shack in bask of the Mt. Diablo sun..and a bit of fog.

I am not sure what was on the Little Bean's mind today. She was truly in rare form.

I love family sessions! These guys were super fun to work with. As most family sessions start out male subjects are so over getting their pictures taken before we even start...but by the end of the sessions they are laughing, joking and trying their best to strike the coolest of poses. This cracks me up every time. Mom arranges the whole thing and the boys totally take it over. As long as Mom gets those great shots I say so be it:)

Happy Independence Day!

What a great end to a long holiday weekend. Quiet dinner at home...a long walk after with the kids and hubby up a hill behind our home to watch three spectacular fire works shows several cities away..There is a lot of cynicism and turmoil in the world; but once in a while just for a few moments the universe seems at peace. This within itself is cause for celebration. Not to simplify things:) but lets add watermelon, barbecue, swimming, and children with cherry popsicle stained lips to list as cause for celebration as well.

The dozens of amazing trains, a ton of vintage displays and fun interactive play areas for the kids make this a great day outing for the family. Well, what can I say...I am way behind on my blog:) It has been a few months and I have been quite busy with many new clients and of course busy chasing three little darlings around.

Out with the old and in with the New...This is the part we all like about a new year and the part that makes us a teeny bit nervous about what is to come..
